What's going on?
With new models of two-way radios being released each year, Motorola has slowly been discontinuing their older model radios. Most recently (as of May 2021), Motorola has discontinued supporting some of their XTS and XPR two-way radios listed below.
- XTS 2500
- XTS 5000
- XPR 6300
- XPR 6350
- XPR 6380
- XPR 6500
- XPR 6550
- XPR 6580
Alongside this discontinuation, Motorola’s Intrinsically Safe (IS) batteries for the above handheld radios will no longer be sold by Motorola Solutions, Inc.
The reason behind no longer supporting IS batteries is due to the cost of the certification process with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and wanting to continue certifying radios and accessories for the newly released Motorola two-way radios.
What this means for you
This means you will no longer be able to buy Motorola batteries and ensure they are intrinsically safe for these older two-way radio models. Firefighters and other hazardous environment workers, partially due to budget constraints, cannot afford to purchase these newer radio models.
Often times local, state, and federal agencies phase in newer two-way radio models over a longer period of time due to these financial limitations. During this transition departments still need two-way radio accessories that are certified as intrinsically safe to ensure the safety of public safety personnel.
How we can help
Understanding that many departments still use these popular radios to communicate during emergencies every day, Waveband will continue to support these radios by still providing Intrinsically Safe two-way radio batteries.
Our batteries are certified through FM Approvals and go through rigorous tests to be certified Intrinsically Safe. You can trust that our IS-certified batteries can be used in fire and hazardous environments.
